Ocean Genome Resource Program Highlights

The OGR archive includes genomic materials collected from every ocean and from diverse habitats ranging from deep-sea hydrothermal vents to open oceans and biodiverse coral reefs. Below are some highlights of OGR projects and links to their collaborators and contributors. Please contact us if you are interested in contributing to these efforts, accessing samples, or for any other information about the Ocean Genome Resource.

Coral Reef Genomic Biodiversity Archive (CRGBA)

Although coral reefs cover only a small proportion of the ocean floor, they account for an oversized fraction of its biological diversity and a disproportionate share of species of conservation concern. To preserve the threatened biodiversity of the Ocean’s coral communities, OGL has created the Coral Reef Genomic Biodiversity Archive. read more...

Marine Mammal Genome Project & Archive

Genome sequencing can reveal a wealth of information for improving marine mammal conservation and health, as well as understanding our own biology. A significant roadblock to genome sequencing, however, is access to appropriate high-quality samples. Many marine mammal species are rare and/or endangered and it can be very difficult to obtain DNA samples from them in humane and ethical ways. OGL is now partnering with major genome sequencing centers and existing marine mammal tissue collections to build a public Marine Mammal Genome Archive that will provide high-quality DNA samples for research.  In addition this program will support a large-scale genome sequencing effort that will improve our understanding of, and enhance conservation efforts for, these remarkable creatures. read more...

Marine Genome Sanctuaries

Marine Sanctuaries are valuable tools for preserving and protecting marine biodiversity. To enhance the value of marine protected areas, OGL has launched the Marine Genome Sanctuary (MGS) Program aimed toward developing DNA banks dedicated to preserving the genomic biodiversity of marine protected areas. These DNA collections provide a tool for conservation research and a critical record of baseline biodiversity needed to gauge the effectiveness of conservation efforts.read more...
