Koty Sharp

Koty received her PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California San Diego) in 2006 where she worked with Dr. Margo Haygood to localize a symbiotic bacterium and the bryostatins, compounds produced by the bacteria, in the bryozoan Bugula neritina. Koty received a Marine Science Network Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce with Dr. Valerie Paul in 2006-2008, during which she investigated the microbiology of several species of Caribbean corals, primarily from the Florida Keys, Belize, and Panama. Her interests include the use of molecular tools, field experiments, and microscopy techniques for the study of symbiotic bacteria in a wide range of marine invertebrates, including corals, sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, and bivalves. In her current position with OGL, her research efforts are focused on bacterial communities within gametes, larvae, and early life stages of several Caribbean corals.

Education
